Baron Forrester
He produced high quality, hand-drawn maps of the production region, and paintings and watercolours of the Douro and Porto. He researched and wrote about technical aspects of port production, including a pamphlet that accused certain port-shippers of malpractice. He was made a baron by the King of Portugal, in recognition of his services to the port wine industry. He died dramatically at the age of 53. After eating at a quinta (estate) owned by Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, he was returning home with Baroness Fladgate and Dona Antonia Ferreira, when the boat in which they were travelling down the river got caught in the rapids, hit a rock, and sank. The ladies survived, but Forrester drowned.
